Note: That you will only see Worksome's global classification tool if you are outside the United Kingdom or United States. For the UK and US Worksome offers IR35 Classification and US Classification respectively.

Worksome’s Global Classification Tool enables companies to compliantly engage external workers anywhere in the world.

When expanding internationally, one of the biggest challenges is determining whether a worker should be classified as an independent contractor or an employee. Misclassification can lead to legal issues, financial risk, and administrative burdens.

Worksome’s built-in classification tool removes that uncertainty by providing a standardized, global framework that:

  • Guides you through the classification process

  • Produces a clear recommendation (employee or contractor)

  • Aligns contract type with the recommendation

  • Offers misclassification indemnification when the recommendation is followed

How to Use the Tool

1. Set Up Classification Defaults (Optional)

You can pre-configure your company’s answers to general classification questions:

  • Go to Hiring Settings > Global Worker Classification

  • These answers will auto-fill in new classifications, but you can edit them per engagement

2. Create the Hire Offer

After creating a Hire Offer, go to the Hire page. Under Hire Actions, locate the draft offer and click Select Engagement Type.

  • You’ll be guided through a page with the following steps:

    • Complete questionnaire

    • View classification result

    • Finalise the recommendation

3. Complete the Classification Questionnaire

You’ll now complete four short sections:

  1. Job Details – Covers location, tools, supervision, etc.

  2. Company Defaults – Auto-filled from your settings

  3. Worker Profile Info – Pulled from the worker’s Worksome account (editable)

  4. Engagement-Specific Info – Focuses on how you’ll interact with the worker

At the end, confirm that the information is accurate and hit Save

4. Generate & Review the WCR

  • Click “Create WCR” to generate the Worker Classification Recommendation

  • You’ll receive a result: either Independent Contractor or Employee

  • Review the recommendation, check the “I have reviewed and approve this classification” box, and Approve Classification.

  • You can download the recommendation as a PDF for your records

5. Finalize and Share the Offer

  • Once confirmed, the classification and engagement type appear in the Contract Summary

  • You can now send the offer to the worker with confidence that the classification is compliant

Making Changes

Need to make a change before the offer is accepted?

  • Click Change contract type to update how you intend to engage the worker

Or click Redo Classification to reset the WCR and answer the questionnaire again

💡 Keep in mind: Changes can only be made before the worker accepts the offer.
