Use this tool to correctly determine whether a worker should be engaged as an Employee or an Independent Contractor using Worksome’s global, region‑agnostic framework.
You’ll review answers before finalizing each classification and can make changes any time before the offer is accepted.

Who is this for?

Available to all clients hiring outside region‑specific flows (e.g., UK IR35 or US W‑2/1099). Helpful when you want a standardized, scalable way to classify workers globally.

What you can do

From the Hire page, you can select an engagement type, complete a guided classification questionnaire, generate a Worker Classification Recommendation (WCR), and finalize the contract.

Set your global defaults

  1. Go to your profile → Global Worker Classification to set default company answers.

2. These defaults pre‑fill future classifications, and you can always review/edit them per hire before approving.

Select the engagement type

After creating a Hire, open the worker’s Hire page and click Select under Engagement type. Choose I want to classify this contract using Worksome Classify, then Save.

Complete the classification questionnaire

Open the Classification tab and follow the guided flow. There are three steps:

  • Job Post questions (e.g., work methods, location, tools).

  • Company default policies (pre‑filled by your admin; review if needed).

  • Contracted Worker details (pre‑filled from the worker’s profile; edit if evidence differs).
Then answer the Hire‑specific questions describing how you’ll work with the contractor under this agreement.

All questions require a “Yes” or “No” — avoid “Don’t Know” responses

Create and approve the WCR

When all sections are complete, tick the confirmation box and click Create WCR.

Review the recommendation (Employee or Independent Contractor), check I understand, and confirm to approve. You can download the WCR and see who approved it.

Change or redo a classification (before acceptance)

Need to adjust the engagement type? Click Change contract type to reopen the first step.

Disagree with the outcome? Choose Redo classification to delete the current result and re‑answer the questionnaire.

Finalize and send the offer

Once approved, you’ll see the engagement type and classification status in Contract Summary on the Overview tab. Continue to finalize and send the contract to your worker.

Things to know

  • You can change contract type and redo classification until the worker accepts.

  • The global tool provides a consistent approach when a region‑specific flow (e.g., UK IR35 or US) isn’t required.
